Supplier Expose: Quality First International

Quality First is an oil supplier located in Guelph Ontario and we thought it would be a great local option. In their own words: Quality First International began as consultants to the food industry and as commodity traders... Research is a part of our focus and we do it to insure that we know the products that we offer and that we are able to supply correct and timely information about these products to our customers.

We bring to the marketplace new ingredients that are natural, functional and efficacious. We hold fair trade and integrity as our guiding principles in all of our dealings.

Julie Clark of Province Apothecary and I have been looking for new better ingredients to address concerns about soy, corn, gluten and coconut allergies, GMOs and excessive refining. One item we've been looking high and low for is vitamine E. The one we have access to is called MT-50 - mixed tocopherols (meaning from natural sources) 50% in a carrier oil of soy 50%. Soy can be genetically modified. So we'd like to find a non soy base, or one that is certified Organically Grown so that we know it's not GMO.

Quality First doesn't describe its offerings on its website, but a rep on the phone told Julie their vitamine E was non GMO in a palm base. Julie asked for an MSDS and got an incomplete, incorrect one. The MSDS does not list the constituents, the percentages of composition - not even the INCI!!!!

I tried my luck weeks later. The rep on the phone did not know anything about the vitamine E and variously inferred that it had no carrier, that it was in glycerine etc. She insisted that all Quality First offerings are GMO-free. She agreed to send me the MSDS and this exchange - copied in its entirety - ensued.

Hi Tracy,

I have the information that you have requested. We do not have any genetically modified products. We practice FAIR TRADE but are not certified. I took the liberty of attaching information about our different shea and cocoa butters for your reference.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Regards,

Karen Umali

Hi,

I could not legally use your vitamine E as you have left the INCI out, identify it lower in the MSDS as glycerin (a pertroleum product to boot) and there is no indication of its constituents or the percentage of tocopherols in the unidentified carrier.

Please could you correct the MSDS and identify the carrier and percentage? Alternately, could you allow me to contact the source supplier?

Best, Tracey
