Revolution? What Revolution?

I named Anarres Natural Health after the anarchist planet in Ursula K. LeGuin's novel The Disposessed. The name connects me to the activist and artist communities I wish to serve. Like the novel's Anarresti, I am contributing what I can to society through my work.

Anarres strives to be as ethical and environmentally friendly as possible.

Wind and Solar Powered

Anarres Clinic is in our home where the electricity is 100% from wind power, and the hot water is from solar tubes on the roof. We use less than half of the natural gas and water that the average household uses due to our conservation efforts. We are a David Suzuki Family!

Local, Small and Ethical Suppliers

I choose suppliers who are local, small enterprises and who share Anarres' values.

No Endangered Species Products

I do not use ingredients, such as Indian Sandalwood or Rosewood, from un-sustainably harvested and endangered plants. I use Australian sandalwood, Santalum spicatum, instead of Santalum album. I encourage my fellow manufacturers and practitioners to refuse rosewood and Indian sandalwood.

No Dirty (crinkly, disposable) Laundry

I use real towels and quilts, sanitized after each use in soap and essential oils rather than detergents, and washed and dried in an energy star washer-dehydrator.

Let The RRRevolution Begin with Refusing Plastics

I am pioneering the use of cellulose bags from vegetable cellulose made from waste tree pulp in North America! I package all products in glass or compost-able containers unless PET is specifically requested by the client. Your own containers are always refillable, and you will always receive a discount for refilling and/or bringing your own container.

* I encourage packaging consciousness and refilling by:

1. Showing the cost of the packaging separately on your receipt.
2. Discounting the cost of the packaging on your receipt when you refill, saving you $2-3 typically.
3. Giving you an additional $1 discount every time you refill.

My business practices were featured in Beth Terry's Blog "Fake Plastic Fish":

It is Anarres' policy that each person who requires natural health care will be treated regardless of ability to pay the standard rate. I strive to make what I offer affordable for everyone through Pay-What-You-Want days, fair pricing, barter and negotiation, while still supporting myself and my family through honest work.

What to Expect at your Anarres Appointment:

* I'll set up the room for you a half hour before our appointment, cleaning, choosing towels and linens, preparing crystal water and boiling water for tea, putting an essential oil I hope you'll enjoy in the essential oil diffuser, preparing your chart and setting the lights.

* When you arrive, I'll greet you at the door, where you can hang your coat and things, remove your boots and enter the clinic less encumbered.

* I'll offer you a cool cup of crystal water (local water that has been filtered with charcoal, and is decanted from a glass jug with a five pointed quartz crystal at the bottom) or a hot cup of tea. I offer six varieties of wildcrafted and organically grown tea from local Algonquin Tea Company.

* First sessions and full treatments begin with an aroma consultation or check in, which you can do with me while you enjoy a FAR infrared sauna

* Anarres' atmosphere is warm and comfortable. We use real towels and quilts instead of crunchy paper and cool sheets.

* There's a Clinic Menu, yet each and every session is geared to your conditions, your needs today and your preferences. I offer 1 ½ hour aroma facials, aroma, mix and match and Qi Stone treatments, 1 hour mix & match bodywork, foot spas, and Qi Drop therapy, half hour aroma consultation, FAR infra red sauna, foot whirlpool, neck firming treatment, polarity therapy, reflexology and Reiki sessions., as well as two-hour caregiver & baby/child bodywork and detox treatments. Anarres offers packages and gift certificates including The Cure (15 hours), Detox Me! (10 hours), Spa Morning (3 hours) and Spa Day(6 hours). (link to page)

Anarres is equipped to help you in your healing process wholistically, in whatever ways meet your needs.

I am fully certified and trained as an aromatherapist, reflexologist and aromatologist, but I also hold diplomas, degrees and/or certificates in Usui Reiki, Relaxation Therapy, Fitness and Nutrition, Natural Health Consulting, Lay ministry, Family Work, Crisis Intervention and Prevention, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing and Adult Education.

I am here to provide healing health care, in whatever ways I can help. If I can't help, then I will refer you to people who can.

Putting my money where my mouth is, more than 10% of all Anarres earnings go to a registered charity on a monthly basis. Anarres is blessed to support: InterPares, working for change among equals www.interpares.ca, the astounding social justice work of The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan www.RAWA.org, the Ethiopian village of Nefas Mewja through CPAR www.cpar.ca, our foster brother Jose Eduardo through World Vision www.worldvision.ca, our foster sister Besse Carolina through Plan International www.fosterparentsplan.ca, Habitat for Humanity www.habitat.ca, and four families through Save A Family Plan www.safp.org.

Anarres provides one-to-one attention. Every oil, cream or lotion is custom formulated for you. There's no one in the next cubicle parked under a magnifying lamp! Spas may have several clients treated by one aesthetician at once! I provide the same treatments, with the same essential equipment, but you will never be abandoned under a steamer, or be vibrated by a machine instead of massaged with real hands!

You participate in the healing process every step of the way.

Anarres provides only handmade, wholesome, non-petroleum, ethically-produced therapeutic and food-grade ingredients and products. Unlike most shops or brands that add essential oils to the same crappy ingredients you can buy at the dollar store, I make my creams, lotions, bath salts and massage oils from scratch. These are mixed for you in front of your eyes, and no ingredients are secret. I source my ingredients thoughtfully, preferring small businesses and cooperatives run with passion for health.
