Description: This butter is extracted from the shea nut of the karite tree & is grayish to ivory white to olive to yellow in colour with characteristic nutty, sometimes citrus-y odour.
Used predominantly for skin care, shea butter is hailed for its protecting and emollient properties. Rich in cinnamon acid, it also protects the skin from UV rays and therefore can be included in skin care products for the sun. It can also be used as a massage butter, as a moisturizing agent in soaps and shaving creams, and as a treatment for minor skin wounds and irritations. Its richness and skin healing and nourishing properties make it perfect for healing dry, cracked heels.
This shea butter is 100% Natural & Unrefined Shea Butter !
Shea Butter Differences
GHANA 100% Natural & Unrefined Shea Butter This variety is produced by an ethically sponsored African Co-op. Using traditional methods, this variety of shea has a yellow colour and the characteristic smell of the nut used in harvesting. The intensity of fragrance and colour of this variety varies depending on the seasons, location and processing.
BURKINA FASO All of my shea butter from Burkina Faso is 100% natural and Fair Trade Certified. The shea nuts are hand gathered by groups of women in villages in Burkina Faso and are sold at a fair price to the butter producers. The shea butter is then naturally filtered to remove impurities thus retaining its excellent skin-nourishing properties. These premium shea butters are of superior quality and have a rich creamy texture with a light grain that disappeared on melting, a clean fresh scent and wonderful butter yellow colour. I offer Fair Trade Certified and FTC+Certified Organically Grown.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND OR USE REFINED SHEA BUTTER:
Refined (Cosmetic Grade) Shea Butter – This variety is the one used in typical manufacturing. Conventional refined varieties of shea are refined with the use of solvents or synthetic chemicals. A more acceptable process uses diatimatious clay that pulls out the impurities and excessive odour. The shea is then naturally sun bleached to whiten the product further.
Organic (Cosmetic Grade) Shea Butter – This variety has been refined to remove colour, odour and texture variations.

How much should I use?
Applications of under 5% should be viewed as adding value only to your label. The impact on your overall efficacy will be minimal.
To see a positive impact on your product, formulators should look to use approximately 10%. However, it is important to note that Shea Butter performs as an oil. Try it with a small batch first!
Fair Trade Compliant
My supplier sources its products using ethical suppliers. Both the shea and cocoa butter are Fair Trade Compliant. This means that profits go back to the community, that environmentally friendly production methods are utilized, that underage or forced labour are not used, and that a minimum price is paid to the producers regardless of market pressure.
