Helichrysum splendidum syn. Helichrysum strictum, Gnaphalium splendidum, Helichrysum crispum also known as Cape gold, Geelsewejaartjie(A), phefo-ea-loti, toanae-moru (SS) Everlasting or Immortelle. Steam distilled from the flowering tops in Monte Negro, South Africa.

Aroma: The yellow-reddish essential oil is popular in fragrance for its unique scent that some described as a mixture of burnt sugar, floral mint and ham! Others describe a sweet, rich honey-like scent with a delicate tea-like undertone.

Description: Helichrysum splendidum occurs naturally in the summer rainfall areas of South Africa, from the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains in the southern Cape through Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Free State, Swaziland, Lesotho to Tropical Africa. Along with this wide distribution, this evergreen and frost hardy shrub can be found on rocky slopes, forest margins, stream gullies and mountain tops.

History: Helichrysums are well known and very popular as a traditional medicine in South Africa. Elsa Pooley mentions in the field guide to the Flora of the Drakensberg and Lesotho, that Helichrysum splendidum has been used to treat rheumatism

Properties: Helichrysum splendidum differs from other Helichrysums in aroma, therapeutics & energetics.

Constituents:
α-pinene: 20%, β-cadinene 10-18%, β-pinene: 9.6%, caryophyllene: 2-10%

Uses: This helichrysum has a significant percentage of b-phellandrene, which is known for its anti-inflammatory & anti-fungal properties. Helichrysum splendidum has been shown to be anti-rheumatic, helping with joint & soft tissue pain and inflammation. Being high in cadinene, it would be beneficial in respiratory blends.

Blends well with: Bergamot, German chamomile, clary sage, frankincense, lavender, geranium, neroli, orange, rose, yarrow.

Safety: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with the eyes should be avoided.
