Scraping the tongue is an Ancient Ayurvedic recommendation for oral health and the overall health of the body, mind and spirit.

HOW COPPER DISABLES VIRUSES

Bill Keevil, Director of the Environmental Healthcare Unit at the University of Southampton points out that Copper Ions - electrically charged molecules - kill dangerous viruses by destroying their genetic material. Copper ions do this by changing the oxygen molecules in the virus. As a result, the virus cells cannot mutate. "Now thee ions are able to punch holes in the cell's membrane, enter the cell and destroy their nucleic acid. So they are completely killed. There is no chance of mutation leading to resistance, and there is no coming back."

Benefits of using a Tongue Scraper

Clears toxins & bacteria from the tongue
Helps remove the coating on the tongue that leads to bad breath
Helps eliminate undigested food particles from the tongue
Enhances the sense of taste
Promotes overall oral & digestive health
Gently stimulates the internal organs
Increases your awareness of your state of health
Since the oral cavity is one of the main gateways between your mind/body and the environment, maintaining the health of this connection is critical to general wellbeing.

This simple practice is a direct way of removing Ama from your physiology. In Ayurveda, Ama refers to any accumulation of toxic residue in the mind-body. This can result from improper eating, poor digestion, or a reflection of an imbalance somewhere in the gastrointestinal system.

In addition, from an Ayurvedic perspective, by removing this coating you improve your ability to taste your food, which makes it more satisfying. By increasing your taste reception, not only do you eat less, but you also eliminate the need to add more sugar, salt, or excessive spice to the food to make it more flavorful. Many of the beneficial phytonutrients and “body signals” that your food contains are first interpreted by the mind-body upon contact with receptors on the tongue. You want to improve this communication between your food and your body by removing any coating that is interfering with that connection. Also, many herbs have their beneficial effects from the initial contact with receptors on the tongue. Hence, you need a clear tongue to receive this healthy information.

What kind of Scraper to use

The Charaka Samhita states that “tongue scrapers should be made of gold, silver, copper, tin and brass and should be non-sharp and curved, so as not to injure the tongue”.

How to Scrape Your Tongue

The tongue should be gently scraped from back to front for 7 to 14 strokes. The scraper may be rinsed off between strokes if there is a lot of accumulation. Some people report stimulation of the gag reflex during scraping, which may indicate that the scraping is too aggressive. If this occurs with gentle scraping, begin slightly more forward on the tongue to avoid the gagging reflex.

A Daily Practise

From an Ayurvedic perspective, tongue scraping should be performed on a daily basis. This ancient practice helps to stimulate the internal organs through energetic connections with the rest of the body, improve digestion by increasing your sense of taste, and cleanse the body by removing Ama and bacteria from your oral cavity. In addition, it increases the clarity of the mind by reducing heaviness and Ama from the head. When your physical and emotional bodies are balanced, it allows you to expand your spiritual awakening as well.

The tongue is the mirror to all the organs of the body, and thus, a daily look at the tongue prior to scraping gives you a clue to your general health. In Ayurveda, a good tongue examination is a useful way of evaluating the health of the entire body.

Care of your Tongue Scraper

After each use, wash your scraper with soap and water. Dry with a towel.

Every couple of weeks, take a tablespoon of lime/lemon juice mixed with a teaspoon of salt. rub the mixture on your tongue scraper with your fingers. Wash thoroughly with water and detergent.

HOW COPPER IS HEALTHY

Copper is an essential trace mineral that is vital to human health. It has antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps neutralize toxins. Our bodies cannot synthesize copper, so you need to get it from dietary sources.

According to Ayurveda, drinking copper-enriched water in the morning on an empty stomach helps balance all three Doshas (Kapha, Vata and Pitta). This also ensures the proper functioning of different organs and several metabolic processes.

Copper is known to be oligodynamic in nature (the sterilizing effect of metals on bacteria) and can destroy bacteria very effectively. It is especially effective against E.coli and S.aureus, two bacteria that are commonly found in our environment and are known to cause severe illnesses in the human body.
Copper helps cleanse and detox your stomach to ensure proper elimination of waste and harmful products. It also regulates liver and kidney function and ensures the absorption of nutrients from food.
Copper promotes the breakdown and elimination of fat cells.
Copper helps regulate blood pressure and heart rate as well as lowers bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Copper is the main component in the production of melanin that defines the colour of your eyes, hair and skin. Melanin also helps keep the skin safe from sun damage, speeds up wound healing and covers up scars.
Copper aids the body’s absorption of iron, which plays a key role in fighting anemia.
Copper also helps in the production of new and healthy skin cells that replace old dying ones.
Copper has very strong antioxidant properties that help fight off free radicals and negate their ill effects – one of the main reasons for the development of cancer.
Copper is known to have brain stimulant and anti-convulsive properties.
Copper regulates the functioning of the thyroid gland.
Copper also has bone and immune system strengthening properties, helping to mitigate arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

CAUTION

Copper is not innately utilized by our body, so too much of the metal can be detrimental. According to the FDA about 12mg/day is more than sufficient for the body to use without causing any harm. So, do not overdo the entire exercise. Drinking water twice or thrice in a day from a copper vessel is more than enough to reap its benefits.
