Fun Fact: There appear to be differences in people's perceptions of the smell, possibly determined genetically, rather than by familiarity or nurture. Some people find the smell to be repulsive, while most find it pleasantly herbal.

History: The peoples indigenous to the Western Cape mountains of South Africa introduced buchu as a medicinal plant to European settlers. Use of the plant spread to Europe and the Americas where it was used extensively as a medicine. In 1821 buchu was included in the British Pharmacopoeia as a diuretic.

Colour: Slight greenish to pale yellow clear liquid.

Common Uses: The essential oil is used in the manufacture of flavourings and perfume.
