Q: Hello,
I came to your website to purchase the FemCap but noticed the Caya diaphragm is also available. I am new to this type of birth control. Which one would you recommend? The things most important to me are: effectiveness, comfort and risk of bacterial/yeast infection or TSS.
I do have children if that is a factor in determining effectiveness. Any additional info you can give me on these products is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
A: Hello, and thanks for asking.
Which one would you recommend?
I recommend the FemCap over the diaphragm because:
~ It is 98% effective when used every time versus the diaphragm's 92% effectiveness.
~ It is rated more comfortable than the diaphragm by 79% of diaphragm users.
The things most important to me are: effectiveness, comfort and risk of bacterial/yeast infection or TSS.
~ Both the cap and diaphragm are made of medical grade silicone and so are non irritating. It is N-9 spermicide gel that is irritating to the mucous membranes, so I only carry non irritating Contragel Green and Caya Gel.
~ The diaphragm sits on the pubic bone so there is as risk of irritating the bladder, leading to UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections). The Fem Cap is not associated with UTIs.
~ There has never been a case of Toxic Shock Syndrome associated with ether device, but rather TSS is caused by super absorbent rayon tampons.
I do have children if that is a factor in determining effectiveness.
Because pregnancy and childbirth enlarge the os, the opening of the cervix, the effectiveness of any barrier method is reduced to the lower end until fertility itself subsides. If you would like to be extra cautious, I recommend using Cycle Beads in conjunction with the FemCap. http://www.anarreshealth.ca/content/contraception-cyclebeads-natural-95-...
