Here's my interview about Anarres' practices.

How did your sustainability journey begin?

I have a lifelong concern for sustainability and have practiced a zero-waste lifestyle for 35+ years. When I started Anarres Natural Health, I created a business model that revolves around waste elimination, local sourcing and fair trade.
My business practices were featured on Beth Terry's Blog "Fake Plastic Fish":

What is your biggest achievement in sustainability so far?

Fifteen years on, we still produce less than a plastic shopping bag of waste per week! Virtually all containers are restored and resold or repurposed. Customers can bring their own packaging for bulk refilling, can buy durable glass and metal containers, can return for credit, or can take from the free-to-reuse jars, bottles and bags. We are diligent recyclers. Through our investments in solar and wind energy, and shipping carbon-neutral within Canada, our operations are carbon negative.

A number of former students and graduates have gone on to work in sustainability and established ethical businesses such as the Pretty Clean Shop, The Lobo Co, Soulfire Sessions, The Little Craft Drawer, Susan's Delicatessen…

What are your sustainability goals for the future?

In the coming years, I plan to do more teaching about natural ingredients and how to make body care that is effective, affordable and good for our personal and planetary health.

Sustainability initiatives:

Packaging all products in glass, metal or compostable containers is fundamental to my work as a responsible aromatherapist. Your own containers are always refillable, and you will always receive a discount for refilling and/or bringing your own container. I encourage packaging consciousness and refilling by:

Revealing the cost of the packaging in person and online.
Providing discounts for refilling and refunds for returning clean packaging.
Selling items in bulk, packed in repurposed clean containers. We do not sell or use single-use plastic packaging.
