Contragel Green: Questions and Answers
Q: Hello,
It seems that both of us are experiencing urinary infection syptoms after use of the contragel. Have you had any other similar feedback at all? It's very unlikely that both of us are allergic to the gel, especially considering its natural ingredients.
I'd be grateful for your thoughts,
MC
A: I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing UTI symptoms!
I've not heard of Contragel associated with UTIs. Contragel is non irritating, in contrast to detergent contraceptive gels such as those containing nonoxynol-9, so it is not associated with triggering infections. For those few with broad based allergies to components of vegetables, it is possible to be allergic, but you would know if you had such an allergy.
Sexual activity can stir up so many things. When certain microbes are pushed up into the urinary tract during sex, infections can set in. Diaphragms have been associated with irritating the bladder because these can push against it, but FemCaps correctly positioned do not.
Latex can be irritating to the vaginal culture as well, but the FemCap is made of medical grade silicone and is considered inert.
UTIs tend to recur because the germs can colonize the urinary tract, and be triggered into re infection by dehydration, irritation from sex, stress, or other imbalances. Because of this, I believe that long term gentle solutions such as the use of unsweetened cranberry juice nightly, or D-Mannose (the sugar in cranberry that germs attach to so these can flush out of the body) are better solutions than chronic use of antibiotics.
I am sorry to not have a more helpful answer for you. Please be sure that both of you are treated. I hope that you enjoy your FemCap and Contragel after your infections are healed.
Best, Tracey
