OVERVIEW
Green tea leaves have undergone minimal oxidation during processing. Green tea originated in China, but it has become associated with many cultures throughout Asia and has recently become widespread in the Western World in place of black tea.

Green tea has become the raw material for extracts used in various beverages, dietary supplements, and cosmetic items.

Common uses: Many claims have been made for the beneficial health effects of green tea consumption, including studies that show promise in the prevention and treatment of cancers, cardiovascular disease, high blood cholesterol, and for glycemic control and weight loss.

A 2015 meta-analysis found daily consumption of green tea to be significantly associated with a lower risk of death from any cause and found that an increase of one cup of green tea per day is linked with a 4% lower risk of death from any cause.

Most researchers agree that tea (black, green, or white) has potent anti-inflammatory properties and that it is a potent antioxidant whether consumed orally or applied topically. Current research also indicates that epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), an extract of tea, can prevent collagen breakdown and reduce UV damage to skin, which is a very good reason to use skin-care products that contain one or more forms of tea.

Constituents:
enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, sterols, related compounds, dietary minerals, and phytochemicals such as polyphenols, flavanols, and caffeine. Polyphenols include but are not limited to epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and epicatechin; flavanols such as kaempferol, quercetin, and myricitin are also found in green tea.

Cautions: Green tea interferes with the chemotherapy drug bortezomib (Velcade) and other boronic acid-based proteasome inhibitors, and should be avoided by people taking these medications.
